Democratic lawmakers will attempt to overturn Governor Christie’s veto of a gun-control bill next week, even though they have not secured enough Republican votes to be successful, Senate President Stephen Sweeney said Wednesday.

Christie this year conditionally vetoed a “common-sense” bill that passed both houses of the Legislature with unanimous support, said Sweeney, D-Gloucester. The Senate will hold an override vote next Thursday, he said.
The bill would require law-enforcement agencies to communicate more closely with state judges regarding people who are seeking to purchase firearms and have mental-health issues in their past.
“Only one person disagreed,” Sweeney said, referring to Christie. “He’s trying to be more and more of a conservative.”
