The New Jersey Attorney General’s office Wednesday filed a court brief seeking to block opponents of the $225 million ExxonMobil settlement from appealing it, Tim Darragh reports for NJ.com.
In a brief filed in Union County Superior Court, attorneys for the state and acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said State Sen. Ray Lesniak, D-Union County, and five environmental organizations failed to meet the legal test to intervene in the settlement.
The state and ExxonMobil had been in court for years over industrial contamination wetlands and waterways in North Jersey and at hundreds of gas stations throughout the state. The Christie administration this year settled for $225 million, far less than earlier estimates of $8.9 billion.
State Superior Court Judge Michael Hogan last month approved the settlement. Hogan called the deal “fair, reasonable, in the public interest, and consistent with the goals of the Spill Compensation and Control Act.”
