Bill would require solar panels in all new NJ schools

UPDATE: The bill was released by the Assembly Education Committee on September 16, 2010 and referred to the Assembly Appropriations Committee

The New Jersey Assembly’s Education Committee on Thursday will consider environmental legislation requiring the incorporation of solar panels in the design and construction of all new public schools in the state.

In the statement to his bill, A-1084, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora says the legislation is good for the community and the environment.
“The use of solar power means less consumption of fossil fuels, reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from local power plants.  A solar power system can also reduce or eliminate a school building’s electric bill.  Installing a solar power system is equivalent to prepaying for 40 years of power at a fraction of the current cost.  As energy rates increase this difference will only increase, leading to escalating savings for the school district over the life of the system.”

Latest heat-beater: Plump, red, Jersey (rooftop) tomatoes

First, it was windmills. Then solar panels.

Now the Atlantic County Utilities Authority is exploring the benefits of green roofs.

The New Jersey authority has allowed a New York company to plant greenery on the roof of the brick building it leases to Comcast.

The goal is for the plants to soak up rain, deflect the sun’s heat, insulate the building and protect the roof, ACUA President Rick Dovey said.

“The sod-busters had it right,” he said of the Great Plains settlers who built homes with turf.

Plant Connection, Inc., based in Dix Hills, N.Y., donated the greenery to the ACUA as a demonstration project in hopes the idea catches on in southern New Jersey as it has in other parts of the country.

Langan’s Jorge Berkowitz named to NJ’s LSRP board

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has appointed Jorge Berkowitz, PhD, LSRP, to the state’s Site Remediation Professional Licensing Board.

Berkowitz, a Senior Associate at Langan Engineering & Environmental Services, will join 12 other members of the Board established to enforce the code of conduct and professional standards required of Licensed Site Remediation Professionals (LSRPs).

Berkowitz’ appointment was also unanimously approved by the New Jersey State Senate Judiciary Committee.

A graduate of Rutgers University with a PhD in Environmental Science, Berkowitz has more than 35 years of experience in the private and public sectors as well as academia. He also spent over 8 years with the Department of Environmental Protection in various positions, leaving the Department in 1989 as an Assistant Commissioner for Environmental Control.

“I am honored by this appointment, and look forward to contributing further to the progress currently being made to improve the environmental remediation process in New Jersey,” said Berkowitz. “Most of my career has been dedicated to the effective redevelopment of Brownfields and landfills in New Jersey, and it is exciting to be part of the recent advances made by the LSRP program, which is already expediting the way we clean up sites in our state.”
