Florida on Sunday reported a record 15,300 new coronavirus cases, the most by any state in a single day since the pandemic reached the United States.

The staggering number was the result of both increased testing and widespread community transmission that has affected the state’s population centers as well as its rural areas. It shattered the previous highs of 11,694 reported by California last week and 11,571 reported by New York on April 15.

Florida is set to hold the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville next month and has ordered schools to reopen five days a week.

Here are some significant developments:

  • President Trump on Saturday wore a mask in public for the first time, while visiting wounded service members and health-care workers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Trump has previously shown disdain toward face coverings amid the coronavirus pandemic and refused to wear them.
  • Louisiana’s Democratic governor announced a new requirement that most people wear a mask in public. The state’s Republican lawmakers have opposed coronavirus restrictions.
  • Walt Disney World in Orlando reopened after having been shuttered for nearly four months, even as Florida continued to report record infections. Testing supplies in the state are running low, and some big labs are taking several days to return results, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said at a news conference. He partly attributed the backlog to testing many asymptomatic people.

New Jersey on Saturday reported 49 more deaths attributed to the coronavirus and 438 more positive tests, while hospitalizations fell again and the state’s transmission rate stayed below a crucial benchmark for the second consecutive day.

The Garden State has now reported 15,525 deaths related to COVID-19 — 13,578 lab-confirmed and 1,947 probable — with 174,959 known cases in the little more than four months since the state’s first case was announced March 4.

Gov. Phil Murphy announced the numbers on Twitter.

By comparison, the state reported 31 new deaths and 367 new cases on Friday.

The latest figures come as numerous other states continue to see surges in new cases. Once one of the nation’s hardest-hit states, New Jersey continues to see its numbers of new cases, deaths, and hospitalizations remain steady after falling significantly from their April peaks.

The state’s latest transmission rate — a key figure to determine how much the virus is spreading and guiding how to further reopen from lockdown restrictions — is 0.98, identical to the rate reported on Friday.

In Pennsylvania, a dangerous precedent, mounting caseload

Are we in for new lockdown?

From John L. Micek, Editor, Pennsylvania Capital-Star

Good Saturday Morning, all. It’s been a sobering week. The United States cleared 3 million confirmed cases of COVID-19. After a lull, the death toll has again begun to rise in some states. And we’ve found ourselves in an intense debate over how to safely send our children back to school this fall.

In Pennsylvania. on Friday, the state hit a grim milestone, as it reported 1,000 new cases, the largest single-day toll in two months.

All this raises a new question, could we be looking at Lockdown Mark II? It’s too soon to say, of course. But we have seen some states retreat from their reopening plans as they deal with a spike in cases.

Closer to home, in Allegheny County, officials hit the pause button on indoor dining. And as CNN points out, there is an argument to be made for localized lockdowns as we enter the most complicated phase of the pandemic

Taken together, it’s a reminder that we’re nowhere out of the woods yet. And, as we’ve said before, just like the ancient Spartans (borrowing from someone else) we can’t drop our shields.

Each of us depends on the other to safeguard public health. That means observing social distancing guidelines and wearing a mask when you’re out in public. Is it an inconvenience? Perhaps. But that scarcely matters. It’s in the service of a greater good.

As ever, take care — and be kind to each other.

Trump steps in and keeps friend Roger Stone out of prison

Set to go to prison on July 14 for lying to Congress and witness tampering, Stone is spared three years and four months in jail by his friend, President Trump

By Peter BakerMaggie Haberman and Sharon LaFraniere New York Times

WASHINGTON — President Trump commuted the sentence of his longtime friend Roger J. Stone Jr. on seven felony crimes on Friday, using the power of his office to help a former campaign adviser days before Mr. Stone was to report to a federal prison to serve a 40-month term.

In a lengthy statement released late on a Friday evening, the White House denounced the prosecution against Mr. Stone on what it called “process based charges” stemming from “the Russia Hoax” investigation. “Roger Stone has already suffered greatly,” the statement said. “He was treated very unfairly, as were many others in this case. Roger Stone is now a free man!”

Punctuated by the same sort of inflammatory language and angry grievances characteristic of the president’s Twitter feed, the official statement assailed “overzealous prosecutors” working for the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, and the “witch hunts” aimed at the president and his associates. It attacked the “activist juror” who led the panel that convicted Mr. Stone and went on to complain about the show of force used by federal law enforcement agents when he was arrested.

“These charges were the product of recklessness borne of frustration and malice,” the statement said. “This is why the out-of-control Mueller prosecutors, desperate for splashy headlines to compensate for a failed investigation, set their sights on Mr. Stone.”

The statement did not argue that Mr. Stone was innocent, only that he should not have been pursued. “The simple fact is that if the special counsel had not been pursuing an absolutely baseless investigation, Mr. Stone would not be facing time in prison,” it said.

Mr. Stone, 67, a longtime Republican operative, was convicted of obstructing a congressional investigation into Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign and has been openly lobbying for clemency, maintaining that he could die in prison and emphasizing that he had stayed loyal to the president rather than help investigators.

“He knows I was under enormous pressure to turn on him,” Mr. Stone told the journalist Howard Fineman on Friday shortly before the announcement. “It would have eased my situation considerably. But I didn’t.”

After the commutation was announced, Grant Smith, a lawyer for Mr. Stone, said: “Mr. Stone is incredibly honored that President Trump used his awesome and unique power under the Constitution of the United States for this act of mercy. Mr. and Mrs. Stone appreciate all the consideration the president gave to this matter.”

Democrats quickly condemned the president’s decision, characterizing it as an abuse of the rule of law. “With this commutation, Trump makes clear that there are two systems of justice in America: one for his criminal friends, and one for everyone else,” said Representative Adam Schiff, Democrat of California and a leader of the drive to impeach Mr. Trump last year for pressuring Ukraine to incriminate his domestic rivals.

Pa coronavirus update: 1,009 new cases added Friday; largest increase in weeks

By FORD TURNER THE MORNING CALL |JUL 10, 2020 AT 11:55 AM

HARRISBURG — The state Department of Health on Friday reported 1,009 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the statewide total to 93,876.

The one-day increase was the largest in at least several weeks but it was not immediately clear if some of the cases were older ones that were being reported by the state for the first time Friday. A large new-case number logged earlier in the week included some “backlogged” cases.

The new-case figure included 35 from the Lehigh Valley: 21 in Lehigh County and 14 in Northampton County.

The state’s data includes both confirmed and probable cases.

Confirmed cases are those testing positive for the virus. Scenarios that would lead to a probable case include one where an individual has not been tested but shows symptoms and has had close contact with a confirmed case.

The state also said there were 32 more deaths from the virus. The statewide total is 6,880.

Hospitalizations

The number of people hospitalized statewide for coronavirus has hardly changed for much of the week. State data showed the number was 598 around noon on Monday and increased to 637 about the same time Tuesday, followed by figures of 649 and 650 on Wednesday and Thursday.

The figure approaching noon Friday was 653 people hospitalized.

Tornadoes possible as Tropical Storm Fay hits Jersey Shore

A flash flood warning has been issued until 2:30 p.m. for Barnegat, Beachwood, Jackson Township, Lakewood Township, Toms River, and Tuckerton. That means the potential for flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage and low lying areas, according to an advisory from the National Weather Service.

“Protecting yourself from immediate threats to life and safety shall take priority,” the National Weather Service said in a warning. “Whenever possible, as long as it does not cause greater harm, all COVID-19 protective action guidance should be followed. Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flooded deaths occur in vehicles.

UPDATE 10:04 a.m. – Wind gusts reaching up to 30+ mph in Ocean County

UPDATE 9:15 a.m. – A flash flood warning has been issued for Atlantic and Northern Cape May County

A flash flood warning has been issued until 1 p.m. for Atlantic and Northern Cape May Counties which could leave flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage and low lying areas, according to an advisory from the National Weather Service.

MOUNT HOLLY – You might want to stay indoors today, as Tropical Storm Fay is expected to bring multiple inches of heavy rainfall and damaging winds across all parts of the Jersey Shore.

tropical storm warning is in effect untiil this evening for the coastal waters in Sandy Hook to Cape May, with damaging winds expected to reach up to 60 mph heading into the mainland, according to the National Weather Service and private meteorologists.

Tropical Storm Fay:Warnings issued for Jersey Shore as storm set to bring heavy rain, wind

The warning advises of possible isolated tornadoes  and tells residents near the shore to take all necessary safety precautions until the storm passes in the evening, the National Weather Service said Friday morning.

Mariners are advised to avoid these hazardous conditions by remaining in port, and seek shelter, alter course and secure their vessel for severe conditions, as the strong winds could produce “severe damage and reduce visibility.”

Forecasters say the biggest impact will be the heavy rainfall that will bring some flash flooding which could life-threatening, as “rapidly rising flood waters may quickly inundate roadways and areas of poor drainage. Streams and creeks could leave their banks, flooding nearby properties,” said the National Weather Service.

The tropical storm warning has been issued for all parts of the Jersey Shore, leaving behind potential heavy rainfall as well as damaging winds with dangerous flash flooding that could damage properties.

Temperatures are expected to range from the high 70s into the low 80s leaving a “steamy, tropical and humid type of atmosphere,” as this will be the weather pattern for the next couple of days, according to Steven DiMartino who runs NY NJ PA weather.

“Heavy rain will expand throughout the region this morning and continue through the afternoon,” said DiMartino. “We should expect to see winds today ranging anywhere from 20 to 40 miles per hour along eastern-Monmouth County with gusts over 40 miles per hour.”

A tropical storm warning has been issued for all parts of the Jersey Shore.

Heading into the weekend, private meteorologists expect the storm to pass by Saturday morning, but will continue to leave heavy rain and thunderstorms on Saturday with a chance of fog. The storms will most likely make an appearance in the early parts of the afternoon and possibly one to two in the evening, according to DiMartino.

By Sunday, another low pressure system will arrive to the Jersey Shore leaving another round of possible isolated showers throughout the day.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the high 70s to low 80s on Saturday with partly heavy cloud cover and Sunday will wrap up with temperatures also remaining in the 70s with humidity, according to the forecast.
