MANASQUAN, NJ — Swimming has been shut down at the beach in Manasquan after more than 60 syringes washed up there on Saturday, officials said.

Officials did not say what time the syringes were seen on Saturday, but said the Manasquan Office of Emergency Management, the Monmouth County Health Department and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection are managing the situation.

Manasquan OEM officials said they will re-evaluate water safety early Sunday, after two high tide cycles.

They said they will issue an update before the beach opens on Sunday.

Environmental emergencies, chemical spills, illegal dumping, odor complaints, and wildlife concerns should be reported to Manasquan Police at 732-223-1000 and NJDEP at 1-877-WARN-DEP.
